Story of Shalini

Shalini Kushwaha is the daughter of Mr. Anil Kushwaha and Deepa Devi. She is the second child in the family from Sankerpur village. Father Anil, is a private school teacher and mother is a house wife. 16 years old Shalini has one elder sister and two younger brothers.

Shalini suffers from ‘Cerebral Palsy (CP) Quadriplegia’ along with polio and was unable to even stand on her own when we met her for the first time

Though the family is poor yet all the members fully support their girl child. Shalini’s father is very cooperative and always stands by her side. Her father left no stone unturned in giving Shalini best possible medical treatment and facilities for her time bound rehabilitation.

In 2012 Shalini came in contact with one of our Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) workers. Thereafter, she started receiving all needful support from the organization which contributed to her growth and quick rehabilitation.

After attending one of the medical camps at our center, Shalini was then referred to ‘Kiran Center’ in Madhopur area of Varanasi for further treatment and intervention. The center provided her with mobility devices such as shoes and other apparatus. The special shoes were attached to her lower limbs which helped her start to walk slowly. As days progressed, the intervention helped Shalini not only to stand on her own legs but also walk and even run with the help of the special shoes.

After a period of time, Shalini was gradually enrolled in ‘St. Joseph School’ within her native area and was also provided with transportation facility. Team even helped her with school fees and TLM materials, which motivated her to continue her schooling. Shalini was good at studies hence she completed her class 8th with good grades and has now been admitted in class 9th.

Due to team’s efforts and tools for her rehabilitation her mobility has now enhanced and is now able to walk even outside her home with the help of her mobility device. This change has boosted the self-confidence of Shalini and she now aspires to complete her graduation and get a job in some MNC in future. The family too is delighted seeing her growth and is now ready to support their daughter in each and every endeavor of hers.
