Inclusive Education Story

Rohit Rawat, Bakshi ka Talaab (BKT)

8 years old Rohit was a mentally challenged boy who hailed from Bhauli village of Bakshi ka Talaab tehsil of Lucknow. Before team met with him, he wasn’t enrolled in any school and used to roam around within his community for whole day.

During the baseline survey done by our Lucknow based partner, team learnt more about his family background, economical status and physical wellbeing. His father Muneshwar Rawat was a daily wage labor and mother Geeta Devi a housewife.

Through our ‘Inclusive Education’ Program interventions, Rohit was enrolled in Class 1 at Primary School Bhauli, Bakshi Ka Talaab in Lucknow.  School Principal, Mrs.  Poonam Rastogi cared a lot about him which is why Rohit never missed his school. During our interaction with his parents we came to learn about positive changes that came in him after getting enrolled at regular school. His grandmother shared that Rohit used to say, “If I will miss the school, ma’am will be very upset”. Another assistant teacher of the school Mrs. Sunita Mishra also admired Rohit a lot which made him feel privileged and special. As a result, he started paying more attention to his schooling, engaging well with his peers and sometimes even playing the role of a Class Monitor.

Rohit’s medical assessment was done at Maal Block Resource Center in Lucknow and he was identified with Mental Retardation.  The BRC team asked him to come again to get a cycle and learning kit.

Whenever Rohit bunked his school principal Mrs. Poonam enquired about him from his fellow mates and they usually informed her that they saw him playing in the village. She then used to send other children and call him for the class. This is how the school principal ensured his regularity in school.

As Rohit was interested in the learning process, his ‘Individual Education Plan’ was developed keeping in view his mental level and abilities. Hence, with help of thorough and regular assessments, social behavioral and life skills along with a robust academic plan his development was ensured which is now helping him evolve as a bright and young child from the narrow lanes of Bhauli village, BKT.
