Background:
The basic rights and principles of participation are found in articles 12, 13 and 15 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). It is to counter this non-participation and to engage the children’s potential for the individual and communal growth, the concept of the Children’s Parliament has been introduced. Every child between 6 to 18 years of age is a part of it.
The Children’s Parliament is a group of children of a particular village/ neighborhood who come together as a group for activities, learning, and to represent their interests and opinion to the decision makers of the village/neighborhood.
The formation of Children’s Parliament has been done with the following objective;
“Equipping children with the basic concept of the Children’s Parliament provide an opportunity to learn ‘life skills’ for example, about their rights, health, and education as a result they become aware and contribute in decision making process of administrative system through their life skills learning.”
Jan Vikas Samiti initiated the formation of child parliament in the month of February, 2020 by creating awareness training at different level blocks followed by the state level child parliament where 31 children took oath on 23rd February, 2020. The child parliament has started its work at different villages/neighborhoods.
The children parliament under the guidance of Jan Vikas Samiti has 1995 children in 70 villages of 4 districts namely Varanasi, Jaunpur, Chanduali, and Mahamudabad in Uttar Pradesh.
